Camping on the Tar will become even easier.
Paddle an easy, quiet, beautiful long weekend trip; a 4th of July hangout for the night paddle; or a simply hangout on the river’s edge for the day. The three options involve short, easy shuttles too.
On Monday night (1/12/16), Greenville City Council approved to build 3 new covered river platforms by partnering with the non-profit Sound Rivers. Construction should start summer 2016.
Once built, the Tar-Pamlico river will have 13 river camping platforms and campsites, with the nearest current platform only 36 minutes east of Raleigh, in Bunn, NC.
The map (above) shows the approximate locations of the 3 platforms and the current nearest public access points.
Currently, the nearest platform (the WRMC Platform) upstream is 21 miles from the Greenville Upstream Platform. The nearest current downstream platform (the Cypress Hideaway Platform) is 12 miles from the Greenville Downstream Platform.
